Is there really a right or wrong way to promote your small restaurant business on Instagram? We think so. So we’ve put together some resources to help you bring your A-Game to Instagram and leave behind the pixelated tacky quote photos. (Do they really have anything to do with your food anyways?)
Instagram Hacks: 7 Ways To Turn Any Restaurant Into A Social Media Powerhouse
We’ll start things off with a very obvious Instagram Hack for any aspiring food business. If you can get various food bloggers, food channels, and food influencers (or should I say, infoodencers…. don’t worry, we hate that we just said that too) to post about your restaurant, you’ll gain all the benefits of their trusted following while creating mass awareness for your brand and your food. Be inviting, and treat them to complimentary dishes or gift cards to your restaurant for posting about your food. (Some may require a cash compensation, but trust me, it is worth the investment). Follow @WPGEats on Instagram.
Here’s a hack that goes hand-in-hand with the one prior, but with one caveat: limit contests to 1 or 2 per partnership. For best results be sure to offer at least a $50 Giftcard for your giveaway. It’s as simple as this: “Like, tag a friend, and follow [your restaurant handle here].” Ask the influencer if they’ll share two or three pictures over the course of the next week and a half, and watch the followers roll in. Read more in-depth on these last two hacks at Wordstream.
Don’t sleep on your hashtag research. Instagram will give your photo 12.6% more impressions with at least one hashtag. You can use free sites such as Top Hashtags to search for the top trending hashtags in your keyword search. Use some descriptive keywords, location keywords, and create some of your own to stay consistent with your branding. Widen your audience from just your followers to the hungry people of Instagram who are actively searching for some food that they wish they were eating.

Interest in food photography is on a tremendous rise, but that doesn’t mean testing out your personal photography skills with the latest iPhone release (although the quality on the iPhone X is supposed to be worldly). Take part in national food holidays and be sure to use relevant tags; #nationaldonutday, #burgerweek, #pancakeday. Although it is always encouraged to be creative, let’s stay relevant by using hashtags that are trending with your food holiday. Don’t try to be funny by posting a muffin on national taco day. We’ve found a free site you can use to plan ahead of time and stay up to date with national food days here.
One of the most important hacks to Instagram is creating an engaging community. I always tell all my clients one of the most important things to do with your social media is to showcase your customers and your staff. I would hope you celebrate your staff without social media, but doing so on a platform like Instagram can be a very good look for your business. Try posting some positive feedback about an employee that you’ve received from customers in the caption of your posts, congratulating that employee on a good month. Here’s some more information on this Instagram Hack.
